| HIGH FAMILY High Ranch and Rodeo Co. is located at Elnora in East Central Alberta, Canada. The land is very rugged with willow brush covering the rolling hills, your either going up a hill or down a hill. The High family consists of Lorne, Kelly and our kids, Shaelyn, Logan and Jacey and about 150 – 200 head of bucking cattle. Our first rodeo cows were purchased from Wilf Girletz in 1979 and run along with the High family’s ranching operations which included commercial cow/calf and purebred Limousin and Brahman beef cattle. We custom fed Wilf Girletz’s young rodeo bulls until his passing in 1995, giving us access to Wilf’s great knowledge and bloodlines. That same year, we sold all our bucking horses and left the family beef ranch to pursue our dream of raising great bucking bulls. Since then, Rodeo Cattle has been our only business. In 1997 a purchase from Bob and Kristen Tallman got us started in the RSR (now the ABBI) and gave us the genetic boost we were looking for as well as creating a life long friendship. From this calf crop came High 807 Bo Howdy and 811 Kellys Kat, as well as some of our now foundation cows. This same year we started bucking all our females and DNA’ing and registering all our keepers in the RSR. Our cows are handled only twice a year and tend to be on the wild side, they calve on their own in April and May and our only calving tool is a set of binoculars. Thus we have strived to produce a tough set of females that will function without our help. We expect a lot out of our cows, good feet, udders, fertility and mothering, and they have the pedigree and performance to throw more “Buck” into their calves. Over the next 10 years we have had quite a roller coaster ride in the rodeo cattle business. Flying High Rodeo Co. was created to produce events, such as Buckers of Canada - Registered Rodeo Cattle Sales, Bucking Bull Futurities, and Professional Bull Ridings. Our kids have lived their entire lives helping with the feeding, flanking, secretary and timing at these events. In May of 2003, a BSE positive cow was found in Canada, shutting the borders to exporting cattle and decimating the cattle industry in Canada. We culled hard, pinched pennies, refinanced and refinanced again. We give credit to our parents, Larry and Joyce High for helping us through, and for the sacrifices of family holidays, school trips and sports that our kids made to keep these cattle fed. We’re proud of how our family has stuck together in these hard times and show the love for the family ranch and these “Brammer” cows. 2007 was bitter sweet as we had 2 of our top 4 year olds killed in separate bull fights and had to start hauling a couple of our 3 year olds. Well, they rose to the challenge, both X427 Krime Spree and 404 I’m A Gangster qualified for the WPB Finals and the PBR Finals. I’m A Gangster was named WPB Bull Of The Year and was also runner up Bull of the PBR Canada Finals, Krime Spree placed within the top 5. November 19th, 2007 the border finally opened to Canadian cattle. November 20th we had a deal with Tom Teague to send both these bulls south. They are both sired by our home raised herd sire #007 Yippy High Yea. We have been in “the business” for almost 30 years – we don’t have all the answers but we’ve heard all the questions. We have strived to produce a set of females that anyone could be proud to own and bulls that can buck at the highest level. Thank you for visiting our site. |
